Beira Interior

A Beira Interior Norte limited to the district of Guarda, and south-east with Spain, with South Portalegre, Santarém in the west, northwest and west with Leiria in Coimbra. The relief of the district is quite hilly, especially in its northern part, where the Serra da Estrela, the Gardunha of Lousã and Malcata. The southern part of the county shows large areas plateaux, broken by valleys embedded in several tributaries of the right bank of the Tagus, and the rivers Erges, Ponsul, and Ocreza Zêzere. There are thermal springs in the Sierra Unhais in Monfortinho and Serta. In its traditional crafts are the embroidered bedspreads linen line of silk (with secular reasons). Tourism is a growth business in the physical side of the district and is expanding the practice of sports and sports related to snow, hunting and fishing. And Castelo Branco Covilhã, seat of the University of Beira Interior, are important centers of higher education, which contributes to the development of the region.
